Apple Official Windows 8 Drivers – BootCamp 5

Apple has at long last published official Windows 8 support - but only for 64 bit Windows and only if you are running OS X 10.8.3. A tad irritating if, as on my machine, Windows 8 installed itself as 32 bit and not 64 bit.

The small print is at Boot Camp 5: Frequently asked questions

  1. Just spent a while reading your site and am very impressed with the advice you provide about using Bootcamp 4 & 5 with Windows 7. Unfortunately, I am unemployed and still using my old Macbook Pro 3,1. So nothing fancy here, but I cannot figure out how to install Windows 7. I’ve successfully created the partition, but when I open Bootcamp and try to install my Windows 7 Home Premium, I don’t get any of the prompts that are indicated in the Apple Bootcamp literature. I simply get a black screen, asking me to ” “1. 2. Select CD ROM Boot Type _.” I’m reluctant to type in anything and proceed, for fear of overwriting my OSX partition. Any advice on this one? Thanks so much.

  2. Hi Charles, the black screen and that prompt seem very Windows-y to me, which suggests you might already be as far as booting to something Windows. Are you sure it’s a ‘proper’ Windows 7 installer DVD you’ve got?
I’d try googling windows sites for the message anyway.
If you restart the macbook with the Alt key held down, do you get the option to boot from the installer DVD?

  3. hi, im with a big problem… im trying to boot my macbook pro 2012 for more then a week now, and im getting some problems.. i have two copies of windows (8 and 7, both 64 bit), both original and i also have the keys for that, all original of course, but im trying to use a flash drive to do the process. the thing is, when i try to bootcamp for windows 7, i get the black message saying “no booteble device, press any key”, so then i reset and press alt, and there shows up 3 “drivers”, one is the os x, the other one is restore (or something like this) and the last one is windows (if i click in windows the black window shows up again). then i go back to os x and remove the particle using the bootcamp.

now the problam with windows 8 is a little different : i do all the process with bootcamp, (while im doing, a message pop up saying that the bootcamp just support windows 7 or lower) (im using bootcamp 5.0.3 and os x 10.8.4), so i do everything and the same message in the black window pops up, and i reset the mac. but this time, 4 “drivers” one is the os x, the seconde restore (or something like this), the third is windows (black window) and the last one i dont really remember but is something boot i think… when i click in this one, the windows finally run. ask me if i want to install, i click yes, the language, ask me the key, and them the partition.. in this part, i get stocked, cuz i find the one saying bootcamp, and click format, but a error pops up saying “Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks.
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer’s hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk’s controller is enabled in the computers BIOS menu.”
and i cannot proceed… then i need to restart, press alt, os x, bootcamp, and delete de partition. and now i dont know what to do =[
sry for the size of my text, but i really need help.. thanks

    1. Hi Andre, I think the first thing I’d do is boot back into OS X and delete the BootCamp partition and start again. That might deal with your MBR partition table problem.
Your MacBookPro has a DVD drive, right? So installing BootCamp should just be a case of following Apple’s instructions very very carefully. After creating the bootcamp partition, you FIRST put the Windows Installer DVD in the drive and then let BootCamp Assistant restart the computer. If doesn’t work you may have a bad Windows Installer disk.
The other reason you might have got the ‘MBR partition’ message is because you got as far as the windows installer starting up, put told it the wrong partition to install onto. For instance if you had a windows formatted USB drive plugged in and chose that as the place to install windows.
